Program Assistant, Penn Program in Environmental Humanities
Rachel Ishikawa joined PPEH in January 2019 as the Program Assistant. She is an audio producer, who makes music, theater scores, and radio. Her work is multidisciplinary, combining art and journalism, but ultimately speaks to larger themes of liminality, representation, and place. From 2016 - 2017 she was the Social Practice Lab artist-in-residence at Asian Arts Initiative, where she worked closely with young people to develop Chinatown Beats, an online audio sequencer that samples sounds recorded in the quickly gentrifying North Chinatown neighborhood. Rachel's radio pieces have been featured on WHYY, WXPN, WCAI, 20kHz, and Transom.org. Her most recent piece with 20kHz explores bioacoustics and the possibility of plant consciousness.
