PPEH Fellows: End of Year News and Notes

Catch up with several of our 2017-2018 graduate and undergraduate PPEH Fellows, as they complete their public engagement projects, celebrate milestones, and look back on their year.

 

Nicole Welk-Joerger, Doctoral Candidate in History and Sociology of Science

  • Welk-Joerger successfully helped co-organize a conference titled "Environments of Modernity" with graduate students in the English department.

  • Finished one dissertation chapter and attended an international workshop in Shanghai to present her work.

  • Completed three short ethnographic excursions while acting as a PPEH Fellow with 1) a feed company meeting, 2) a farm where animals are fed citrus pulp, and 3) four farms located across upstate New York and the New England region with a PA dairy club.

  • Awarded both the Lemelson Center Fellowship and the Smithsonian Institute Fellowship Program (SIFP) to work with staff at the National Museum of American History over the summer and possibly into the next academic year. Welk-Joerger was also selected as a Wolf Humanities Graduate Student Fellow for the 2018-2019 year.

 

Alexis Rider, Doctoral Candidate in History and Sociology of Science

  • Rider is finishing planning for an artist and academic intensive titled, “Embodying Histories.”

  • Participated in a research residency located at the archipelago of Arctic Svalbard, along with other visiting artists/scientists reflecting on climate change and their own creative practices.

  • Awarded a Penn Provost Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching.

 

Ayodh Kamath, Doctoral Student in Architecture

  • Kamath is producing a series of temporary sculptures and performative installations at Bartram’s Garden in late May 2018 that reflect on waste streams and river-adjacent architecture

  • Created a Tumblr site (https://trashbridges.tumblr.com/) and an Instagram account (@trashbridges) to document how the project progresses.

 

Luna Sarti, Doctoral Student in Italian Studies

  • Sarti developed a clearer idea of what her dissertation this year: a focus on the River Arno, with its chapters will be structured around the idea of tide. Sarti will analyze texts through the concepts of flood/drought.

  • Planning to attend the Medici Archive Project summer course in Paleography and Archival Studies in Florence in June.

  • Awarded the Department of Romance Languages Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

 

Alex Anderson, Undergraduate, Comparative Literature & Literary Theory

  •  Anderson continued his work as a core member of the Data Refuge team.
  • Awarded a summer Price Lab Digital Humanities Fellowship to continue work on the Data Refuge Stories project.
     

Carlos Price-Sanchez, Undergraduate, English and Earth & Environmental Science

  • Price-Sanchez completed a draft of his book, Paper Waters.

  • Produced a poetry reading / performance at Slought, titled “Paper Waters: Dreams,” along with Data Refuge collaborator and PPEH Fellow Seung-Hyun Chung.

  • Selected for the Best of Net Anthology 2017.

  • Awarded the College Alumni Society Poetry Prize.

 

Sam Sanders, Undergraduate, Germanic Languages and Literatures

  • Sanders is continuing his research project, "Tour of a Schuylkill River Past," this summer as a research associate with PPEH and the Schuylkill River Research Corps.

  • Awarded the Erich Friedmann Memorial Prize - Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures

  • Accepted an entry-level position with Qualtrics (qualtrics.com) at their global headquarters in Provo, UT, and will be relocating to Salt Lake City in mid August.


 

Seung-Hyun Daniel Chung, Undergraduate, English

  • Produced a poetry reading / performance at Slought, titled “Paper Waters: Dreams,” along with Data Refuge collaborator and PPEH Fellow Carlos Price-Sanchez

  • Awarded a Wolf Humanities Center Undergraduate Research Fellowship; Collective for Advancing Multimodal Research Arts (CAMRA) Social Justice Media Fellowship; Kelly Writers House/Theatre Arts Program Penn Plays Playwriting Fellowship; Humanity in Action - John Lewis Fellowship in Civil and Human Rights; Princeton-in-Asia Fellowship; Dr. Rosane Rocher Prize for Best Undergraduate Essay in Asian American Studies; and a Judy Lee Award for Best Dramatic Writing.

  • Accepted a position to teach English in Japan as a Princeton-in-Asia Fellow next year after graduation in May.
