PPEH Welcomes Summer Research Interns!
April 9, 2019
The Penn Program in Environmental Humanities is delighted to welcome two new public research interns for summer 2019, Lucy Corlett and Jacob Hershman! During their internships, Lucy and Jacob will support ongoing public research in Southwest Philadelphia that addresses urban waters, historic wetlands, environmental justice and toxic legacies, as well as sea level rise.
Lucy Corlett
I am a rising senior in the College of Arts and Sciences majoring in Urban Studies with a concentration in Environmental Studies, and a minor in Hispanic Studies. In my free time, I am a coordinator of Fossil Free Penn, a writer for Bloomers (Penn’s all-female comedy troupe) and an Urban Leadership Fellow with the Penn Institute for Urban Research. I am interested in the intersection of public policy and environmental justice, as well as the social determinants of urban health and how environmental variables, such as water and land contamination, exacerbate health disparities. At PPEH this summer, I am looking forward to exploring grassroots and governmental responses to environmental threats and learning more about how Philadelphia will address the challenges presented by climate change.
Jacob Hershman
I am a rising senior in the College of Arts and Sciences studying English and minoring in Philosophy. Beyond the classroom, and above the basement in which I am the lead guitarist of a soft-punk band called Contrapasta, I serve as the Campaign Coordinator of the student-run fossil fuel divestment group Fossil Free Penn. At PPEH this Summer, I am looking forward to developing my knowledge of the role of the humanities in environmental advocacy, assisting PPEH’s educational mission through creating a public humanities exhibit, and - most importantly - working with people who care about the earth just as much as I do.
