Welcome to our 2019-2020 Graduate Research Fellows

September 13, 2019

PPEH extends a very warm welcome to our newest cohort of graduate research fellows for the 2019-2020 Year of Elements:

Alex Chen Headshot

Anthropology doctoral candidate Alex Chen will examine the social life –everyday maintenance and repair work, emergency drills and volunteer exercises, tours and public education –that revolves around bio-containment units and the ways “air” circulates to create social lives.

Knar Gavin headshot

English doctoral candidate Knar Gavin's will explore how experimental ecopoetic strategies can carve out ethically charged spaces for readerly activation and environmentalist inquiry; and seek to evolve PPEH's digital spaces to enable formal environmental humanities conversations to carry on meaningful afterlives.

Aylin Malcolm headshot

And English doctoral candidate Aylin Malcolm will turn to the medieval past to contextualize contemporary environmental perspectives and challenges. She plans, among other projects, to create an online sound map of Philadelphia, featuring human and nonhuman voices from around the city.

In the Spring 2020 semester, Aylin, Knar and Alex will participate in Faculty Director Bethany Wiggin's Public Environmental Humanities seminar to realize and implement the public engagement projects emerging from their research, as well as edit a thematic series on the PPEH Fellows Blog.
